LA Tenorio was relieved that it didn’t take Barangay Ginebra three overtimes to get past Rain or Shine on Monday night, but insisted it still took a lot for the Gin Kings to pull off the 88-80 win in Game One of their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal series.
After needing three extra sessions to hack out a 100-92 win over the Elasto Painters in their last game of the eliminations last Friday, the Gin Kings needed just four quarters where they buckled down to work for the most part.
“Onga eh (wala ng triple OT), pero pahirapan din,” Tenorio insisted after playing for almost 57 minutes - the fourth-most all-time among locals- last Friday. “Siguro we were more focused on this game, most part of the game. I’m not saying buong game, but most part of the game, yung focus namin nandun.”
“We really find ways how to execute offensively and our defense also, kasi alam naman namin na mahirap kalabanin ang Rain or Shine, kasi they have multiple actions eh, so we have to really be great on executing our defense against their offense,” he added.
On offense, Tenorio stood at the forefront with 16 points, highlighted by four treys, four boards, and three assists in almost 39 minutes, but his teammates took over in that 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter that gave them enough separation to score the win.
“Nung latter part lang talaga we executed well our defense, but nung first few parts of the game medyo nahirapan kami tsaka dun sa pressure nila,” Tenorio said. “Kailangan din namin makita yun, plus yung zone nila nung nakahabol sila, nung naka-run sila, so we have to take a look at that also.”
“Marami pa rin dapat kaming kailangan i-adjust even though nanalo kami ngayon,” he added. “So kung magaadjust sila, then next game magaadjust din kami, pero sa game nga lang. Yung focus namin dapat mas doblehin pa namin next game.”
