LA Tenorio is hoping to continue to be the model of durability in the PBA after breaching the 500-game barrier of consecutive games played in the league.
Asked if he’s planning to play 500 more games, the Ginebra star sentinel was more than hopeful.
“Sana (magtuloy),” Tenorio, who will turn 33 in July, said after the Gin Kings’ 107-99 win over San Miguel Beer on Sunday night. “Yun naman ang goal eh. As much as possible, yun yung maganda mangyari – no injuries and playing hard pa rin.”
After playing his 501st game on Sunday night, Tenorio is now 95 away from matching the all-time record of consecutive games played set by legend Alvin Patrimonio.
But Tenorio would rather not put much weight into reaching the record, saying he’d rather focus on things he can control.
“Ako, hindi ko naman iniisip yun eh. Going into the game, always just play hard, yun lang,” the 11-year veteran said.
Aside from his 'Ironman' streak, Tenorio proved to be a barometer for Ginebra as he bounced back after a poor performance in a loss to Rain or Shine last Friday with a spirited showing against the Beermen.
After contributing just four points on 2-of-9 shooting, three assists, and three boards in 34 minutes against the E-Painters, Tenorio registered 20 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in 38 minutes against SMB.
“(But I had) no expectations going into this game,” Tenorio insisted. “My expectations lang talaga is to help the team defensively, maging anchor, and of course, to execute our offense, kasi hindi namin pwedeng pabayaan din ang opensa namin this game kasi they’ll make us pay.”
“Talagang ang plano namin is to (at least) split these two games,” he added, referring to the Gin Kings’ back-to-back games. “If we can win two games, mas maganda. Medyo nawala kami sa focus after a long break, so naging wake-up call sa amin yung Rain or Shine game to be more focused defensively."
After Tenorio extended his personal streak, the Gin Kings try to build another win streak as they return to action on Friday night against Blackwater in a road game in Binan, Laguna.
