BARANGAY Ginebra displayed its postseason form on Wednesday night a month before the real playoffs start.
LA Tenorio stressed the Gin Kings went into their 103-77 blowout win over Kia with a sense of urgency in their bid to get a rhythm going in the Philippine Cup after losing four of their last five games that negated their 2-0 start to the conference.
“We needed that game badly,” Tenorio said after the win moved them back to .500 at 4-4. “Coming into this game, this is our playoff game already. This is the start of the playoffs, so this is Game One of our playoffs.”
“On Sunday, that will be our Game Two, that’s our mindset already,” he added ahead of their matchup against TNT four days later. “’Di ba when you’re in the playoffs, you can’t afford to make mistakes or let go of one possession, so it’s really important for us to be in the playoff mentality.”
Coming off an 81- 78 loss to NLEX last week, the Gin Kings couldn’t care less who their next opponent was – as long as they ended up victorious.
“The good thing about the game today is the whole team responded,” Tenorio said. “We know how hard it is to play in the playoffs. It doesn’t matter kung sino yung nakalaban namin, today but the important thing is really for us to get the W.”
Tenorio was definitely in playoff mode in orchestrating the offense along with Scottie Thompson, tallying 13 points, built around three triples, to go with five assists, three rebounds, and one steal, while committing just one turnover in over 25 minutes as a starter.
“Alam namin how to play in the playoffs kasi we’re preparing ourselves starting from now,” Tenorio said. “I think good news itong nangyari sa team namin. And we know how to play in the playoffs, that’s why this game we responded so next game ulit.”
