LA Tenorio continued to prove why he’s the PBA’s Ironman as he best typified the hard work that Barangay Ginebra put in just to dispatch Rain or Shine, 100-92, in a grueling triple-overtime battle for a place in the Philippine Cup playoff.
No one saw more action than the Gin Kings star point guard, who played almost 57 minutes (56:52) in running the team’s offense and ended up logging the fourth most minutes in a game all-time among locals after Kerby Raymundo (61), Jun Limpot (60), and Sonny Jaworski (58).
“We have to find ways how to win,” Tenorio said. “Kailangan talaga namin mailusot ‘to eh. Wala namang ibang choice, so obviously kailangan talagang isagad kung kailangan isagad just to get the win para magkaroon kami ng chance sa playof
Tenorio registered 20 points, six rebounds, two steals, and one assist, against eight turnovers as he admitted playing his most exhausting game.
“Oo, aside from playing in a series na sunod-sunod,” the 12-year veteran said. “But again, ‘di pwede maging excuse kasi pagod ‘di ba especially sa ganung ka-importanteng laro. We dont wanna make an excuse na pagod.”
“Obviously, tao lang din, napapagod din talaga sa game, but bottomline is pag kailangan talagang manalo, you don’t have any choice. As long as nandiyan ka sa court, bigay mo na kung anong kailangan mo ibigay - for the team, not necessarily scoring but defensive stops or whatever na mabibigay mo sa team.
Tenorio’s heavy minutes was just the reflection of coach Tim Cone’s faith in his prized playmaker.
“I think yung trust na binigay sa'kin ni coach Tim malaking bagay din yun knowing na in the second, third overtime I was struggling with my offense. But he trusted me na nandun ako,” he said.
Tenorio is just cherishing his ability to still last on the court for as long as he did, in the process finishing his 543rd consecutive game to move just 53 games away from tying Alvin Patrimonio for most games played.
“It’s a blessing for me,” the 33-year-old cager said. “With my age right now, my mileage, not missing a single game, its truly a blessing for me.”
“I’m sure a lot of players, a lot of aspiring basketball players want to be in my shoes right now, so I take it as a blessing right now na nakakalaro ako ng matagal hanggang ngayon naglalaro pa rin ako,” he added.
"The team trusted me especially the coach so it’s really a blessing for me and I don’t want to take it for granted right now. Kasi hahanap-hanapin ko yan eh kapag nawala na ako sa PBA or pawala na ako sa PBA, hindi ko na makukuha yan eh.”
