Mark “The Spark” Caguioa scored 12 of his 19 points in the payoff period to help Barangay Ginebra outlast sister team Petron Blaze, 83-80, on Sunday in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings scored their third win in five games.
Down by nine, 71-62, with eight minutes and 27 seconds remaining in the game, the Kings went on a 15-2 run, with eight of their points coming from Caguioa, to grab a 77-73 lead.
“It’s a great feeling to win like this. He made it possible,” Kings coach Siot Tanquingcen said.
Caguioa scored on an array of shots in the fourth—from downtown, mid-range, and from the charity stripe.
“He was just a scoring machine,” Tanquingcen said. “I’m privileged to be working with people like Mark. He’s a blessing.”
Alex Cabagnot gave the Boosters some life when his triple cut the deficit to two, 82-80, with 21.5 seconds left, but that was the closest they got.
Cedric Bozeman added 16 points and 11 boards for Ginebra, which now shares third spot with Powerade.
“It’s still a long way to go, pero nakikita ko na ang direction na pinupuntahan namin,” Tanquingcen said.
The Boosters, who dropped to 3-3, had five players in double figures, with import Eddie Basden and Chris Lutz pacing them with 15 points apiece.
