AFTER exploding for 30 big points in Meralco’s 103-100 overtime win over Phoenix in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday night, KG Canaleta got a lot of ribbing from import Arinze Onuaku.

The teasing had a lot to do with the volume of shots taken by Canaleta - 28 in all.

“Twenty eight shots daw ako, ang dami. Jordan daw,” a laughing Canaleta said, referring to his 12-of-28 clip from the field in 31 minutes of play.

“Sabi niya kung ti-nake ko pa raw yung mga pasa niya, baka 35 shots pa raw ako,” he added. “Pero nagbibiro lang yun.”

But the Bolts certainly have no problem with the quantity of shots taken by the veteran forward, especially with the team needing a go-to-guy down the stretch with Onuaku a little passive on offense for Meralco.

Canaleta had nine points in the fourth period and teamed up with Baser Amer to drag a fighting Fuel Masters side into overtime.

“Nag-ready lang ako as usual. Nag struggle ng kaunti yung mga teammates and napaganda lang yung bunot,” said the league’s five-time slam dunk champion.

The 28 shots taken by Canaleta was the most during the game, eclipsing the 25 of Phoenix import Eugene Phelps and 23 of Matthew Wright.

After Canaleta, Amer was the player who attempted the most for Meralco with 16. For his heft and size inside, Onuaku's touches were limited to just 11.

But the product of University of the East fired 6-of-13 from three-point range and added five rebounds for the Bolts that other than the teasing he got from Onuaku, he actually got a pat on the back from the rest of the team.

“Nagtatawanan nga lang kami sa dugout e,” he said. “Buti naman na shoot ko yung iba kaya tumaas din ang percentage ko.”

As Canaleta was being interviewed, Black and the Meralco coaching staff passed by. Black was quick to greet him with the words, ‘Good job KG,’ to which he replied, ‘Thanks, coach.’

KG then added with a laugh, “Good job daw. Twenty eight shots yun.”
