KEVIN Ferrer is back to competing for a playoff spot and even a championship after signing with TNT for the PBA 50th Season Philippine Cup.

Twice a champion with Barangay Ginebra, Ferrer found himself with minnows NorthPort and Terrafirma, reaching the playoffs only twice during that six-year span. Ferrer also endured an Achilles injury that kept him out of the 2023-24 PBA season.

No wonder he feels born-again with the multi-titled Tropang 5G.

“So excited na kinakabahan,” said Ferrer, who won championships with the Gin Kings in the 2017 Governors’ Cup and 2018 Commissioner’s Cup. “Parang rookie uli ako. Excited na Talk ‘N Text na ako. ‘Yung mga expectation nandoon pa rin.”

The 32-year-old Ferrer said he wants to get back to his old form when he made a name as a premier defender and shooter - qualities that made him one of the best amateur players in the country when he played for University of Santo Tomas and won three gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games with the national team.

Kevin Ferrer signs his TNT contract in the presence of TNT team manager Jojo Lastimosa and his manager Marvin Espiritu.

“I hope na mabalik ko uli ‘yung dating Kevin Ferrer. I’ll do my best talaga na matulungan sila na makuha ‘yung championship,” said Ferrer.

Ferrer was released by Terrafirma at the end of the 49th season, making him a free agent. When TNT came calling, it was easy to say yes to the offer.

“’Yung na-release na ako ng Terrafirma, naging unrestricted free agent ako. Minessage ako ni coach Josh (Reyes) na kung pwede ba ako kausapin ng Talk ‘N Text. Open naman ako at na-excite ako na ganun ‘yung dumating sa akin,” said Ferrer.

Ferrer is expected to be a role player in a stacked TNT side that looks to mirror, if not surpass, its two championships last season.

“Talk ‘N Text na ‘to eh. Merong pag-asang makuha ‘yung championship pero paghihirapan namin ‘yun,” said Ferrer, who is in line to make his TNT debut on Friday against Phoenix at the Ynares Center-Montalban.
