LOUIE Alas felt for son Kevin Alas following yet another ACL tear on his knee which he suffered in NLEX’s 87-83 win over Meralco last Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The Phoenix Fuel Masters mentor admitted his son was devastated by the injury – his second in less than a year - that will keep him again for the rest of the season.
“Down yung bata ngayon, but alam ko naman he’ll get over it in time, the same way he did nung last year,” said the elder Alas.
The NLEX Road Warriors guard is set to go under the knife on Saturday, with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jose Raul Canlas performing the surgery.
Alas has returned to the family home in Las Pinas as he momentarily left his unit at the Grove in Pasig after re-injuring the knee.
“Inampon ko muna ulit. Siyempre family support and to keep his spirit up,” said coach Louie.
Friday could have been the first meeting between father and son since Kevin’s return from injury as the Fuel Masters stake their league-leading 4-0 card against the Road Warriors, who are on a two-game winning run.
But now that would have to wait for another year.
“Ayaw munang magpakita ni Kevs,” said the Phoenix coach when asked if his son would be watching the 4:30 p.m. match at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“Ang dami ngang tumatawag na players and coaches, kinakamusta siya. Kaya maraming salamat din sa concern nila.”
The entire family will have a dinner later after the game with Kevin in tow, however, as the Alas clan is hosting some relatives from the U.S. and who will be watching the game.
“Sa dinner na lang pupunta si Kevs. Nahihiya lang sa pinsan niya kasi minsan lang sila magkita,” said coach Louie.
Less than 24 hours later, he’ll have surgery on the same injured knee again.
