ROOKIE Kevin Alas officially joined Rain or Shine’s guard-loaded roster after signing a maximum three-year deal worth P8.5 million on Friday.
The 22-year-old former Letran guard, drafted second overall behind top rookie pick Stanley Pringle, signed the contract in the presence of team owners Raymund Yu and Terry Que, and board of governor Atty. Mert Mondragon at the Rain or Shine office in Pasig City.
Under the league’s standard multi-year rookie contract, Alas stands to receive a monthly maximum pay of P150,000 in his first year, P225,000 on the second, before reaching P337,500 on the final year.
“Siyempre, masaya po ako dahil officially part na ako ng PBA at ng Rain or Shine,” Alas told Spin.ph following the contract signing where he was accompanied by player agent Charlie Dy.
Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao calls Alas an ‘insurance’ draft owing to the uncertainty of star player Paul Lee’s status with the team following his demand that he be traded.
Lee's contract expires at the end of the month, though he has already made clear in his recent talk with Guiao that he wants out of the franchise.
In the meantime, Alas said he intends to keep himself in tip-top shape, while the league’s 40th season is still more than a month away.
The son of Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas said he is looking to bulk up a bit more knowing the physical nature of the game in the league
“Magpapalakas pa po ako at magpapakundisyon. Sa ngayon naman kasi, nasa conditioning and skills training pa lang ang team,” he said.
Alas played a key role in NLEX winning a sixth D-League title after beating Blackwater in the Finals of the Foundation Cup last June. He was subsequently named MVP of the tournament.
