TALK ‘N Text rookie Kevin Alas said he was not out to prove anything to Rain or Shine on Friday.
Alas played his best game as a pro against the team that drafted - and later - traded him, collecting 18 points, six boards, and four assists in 21 minutes in the Tropang Texters' 99-76 win over the Elasto Painters.
But Alas insisted his breakout game had nothing to do with their opponent, which made him the second overall pick in this year’s draft before trading him to NLEX which, in turn, sent Alas to sister team Talk 'N Text in another deal.
“Actually wala naman (ganung motivation),” he said after the game. “It’s just a matter of playing really well. Sa practice naman, talagang I do extra work, at every game dapat nag-i-improve ako.”
In fact, Alas also had a solid game against Alaska where he had 15 points and two assists in 17 minutes that all went for naught as the Texters lost, 100-98.
Now, his performance was rewarded with a win.
However, Alas, who turns 23 on November 13, admitted that being able to practice with the Elasto Painters during the offseason helped, no matter how briefly.
“Siguro familiar ako sa system nila. Alam ko naman ang gagawin nila, so baka nakatulong na rin yun para sa akin.”
But Alas attributes his performance mainly to the trust Texters coach Jong Uichico and his teammates are giving him.
“Ako, hindi ako masyado nag-e-expect. Sabi nga ni coach Jong, I have to wait for my time. Pero thankful ako sa binibigay na confidence ni coach Jong at ng teammates ko.”
