ANTIPOLO City – Kevin Alas was supposed to finally suit for NLEX in its PBA Governors Cup game against Magnolia on Sunday night.
But coach Yeng Guiao opted not to take chances against the curse that is Ynares Center.
“We postponed it kasi nasa Ynares na naman tayo tapos Magnolia na naman ang kalaban. So wala namang mawawala kung hindi kami magmamadali,” said Guiao after the Road Warriors’ comeback win over defending champion Magnolia, 86-85.
“So pinostpone na muna namin yung paglalaro ni Kevin.”
The comebacking Alas is returning from a second ACL injury in a span of 17 months, both of which he suffered in the same Antipolo City playing venue. He sustained the first injury against the Hotshots during the 2018 Philippine Cup semifinals.
But Guiao assures the NLEX guard will be suiting up in his first game of the season on Wednesday against NorthPort.
“Sa Miyerkoles maglalaro na siya just to get him going and let him feel how it is to be back in a competition,” said the NLEX coach. “Pero siyempre sundut-sundot lang muna yun, hindi pa muna namin bibiglain.”
Alas said, ‘akala ko nga lalaro na ako ngayon. Pero kinausap niya ako kahapon (Saturday), na huwag daw muna.’
Physically, Alas believes he’s now ready to play again, adding he’s already been religiously practicing with the Road Warriors for more than a month now. It's now the mental aspect that will be a challenge.
“Ready na ako, siguro more on sa utak na lang yung kalaban ko ngayon,” said the son of Phoenix coach Louie Alas.
