ANTIPOLO City – Ken Bono isn’t about to expect getting regular playing minutes with Meralco following the decent job he did against San Miguel Beer’s June Mar Fajardo in their PBA Philippine Cup match-up Wednesday night.
He’s leaving it all up to coach Norman Black whether his service will be needed again. The name of the game for him is always be ready.
“Siguro, sana, hopefully,” said the seldom-used big man when asked about possibly receiving a longer playing time in the team’s upcoming games after seeing action for 11 minutes against the Beermen with the specific job of trying to slow down the 6-foot-11 Fajardo at the post.
“Depende naman talaga sa coach yun. Basta maging ready ka lang talaga.”
Bono, a one-time UAAP MVP out of Adamson, did come out prepared for the job as he held his own against the four-time league MVP despite the Bolts losing the game at the Ynares Center here, 103-97.
The burly center finished with eight points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field, while at the same time taking on the difficult job of guarding Fajardo.
Despite Bono’s defense, Fajardo still came through with 26 points and nine rebounds, half of his output he poured in during the fourth quarter to help the Beermen stave off a last-minute rally by the Bolts.
“Ginawa ko lang yung best ko na makatulong sa team na i-stop si June Mar,” he said. “Actually hindi mo naman mai-stop si Fajardo, kailangan ma-contain mo lang. So thankful ako sa opportunity na binigay ni coach.”
Black complimented Bono for what he said was a 'decent job' he did against the 27-year-old Fajardo.
"I'm happy for Ken. He did pretty well tonight against June Mar," said Black, who disclosed Bono was nursing an injury and didn't practice for the team until last week.
Bono disclosed he was actually instructed by the coaching staff to be ready as the Bolts needed an extra body inside especially with big men Ranidel de Ocampo and Cliff Hodge both out and nursing injuries.
“Sinabihan naman kami before the game na maging ready lang,” he said. “Malay mo anytime bubunutin ka ng coach. So siguro maging ready ka lang talaga.”
Expect Bono to be that way at every Meralco game.
