'Real' Kelly Williams shows up at a time when slumping Talk 'N Text needed him most

    Jun 19, 2015

KELLY Williams has only been a shadow of his old, dominant self for much of this season, but the real 'Machine Gun' Kelly showed up when Talk 'N Text needed him most.

The 2007-08 PBA MVP scored 14 points on Friday night to lead the Tropang Texters to a 94-85 victory over KIA that kept the proud PLDT franchise in the running for a playoff berth in the Governors Cup.

“It’s been a while," Williams said after one of his biggest games this season. "I thank God I’m still able to play the game and play at a level where I can compete with these guys.”

Williams came in averaging just 5.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in the conference but was aggressive from the get-go. His biggest came in the fourth quarter when he hit back-to-back three-pointers to douse cold water on a KIA that saw the Carnival cut down a 28-point deficit to four points.

He wound up making four of five shots from beyond the three-point arc.

That was a pleasant surprise for Talk 'N Text coach Jong Uichico, who put in Williams in his starting lineup hoping his athleticism and size can help slow down dominant KIA import Hamady N'Diaye.

Williams also succeeded on that end, helping limit the seven-foot Senegalese to his second lowest output this conference of nine points and 13 rebounds.

“He (Kelly) made some shots, but what’s important is that he did a good job defensively on N’Diaye,” said the Talk ‘N Text coach. "Pinahirapan niya si N’Diaye."
