JUSTIN Brownlee has been tapped by Barangay Ginebra to replace Charles Garcia as the Kings try to recover from a poor start in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Brownlee returns to the team he led to two consecutive PBA Governors’ Cup title.
He is coming off a championship run with San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in the Asean Basketball League along with now San Miguel import Renaldo Balkman.
Ginebra coach Tim Cone confirmed the move to replace Garcia with Brownlee after player agent Sheryl Reyes made the announcement on social media.
“We have decided to replace Chuck Garcia with Justin,” said Cone. “He will join us in practice immediately and suit up for our June 1 game against Meralco.”
Incidentally, Brownlee’s last game in a Ginebra uniform was against Meralco, leading the Gin Kings to Game Seven victory in the Governors’ Cup finals at the Philippine Arena.
The Gin Kings made an import change after falling to a 1-3 win-loss record, bowing to Phoenix in double overtime, 103-98.
Cone said he was also saddened to let go of Garcia, whom he describes as “coachable.”
“I’m sorry to see Chuck Garcia go, however. He was a great guy and very coachable. We wish him the best in his next assignment,” said Cone.
In his final game with the Gins, Garcia had 19 points and 18 rebounds before fouling out.
“Mga ka-barangay, it’s official. Justin Brownlee is back. Ginebra’s import once again,” Reyes wrote on her Facebook account.
