SAN Miguel star June Mar Fajardo was delighted to reunite with Beermen legend and his former mentor Ramon Fernandez during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards on Tuesday night at the Manila Hotel.
Two of the best PBA players were in attendance during the PSA Awards with Fajardo receiving his Mr. Basketball award for winning his fourth straight PBA MVP award last year, tying Fernandez for the league record.
Incidentally, Fernandez, who also played for San Miguel in the tailend of his PBA career from 1988 to 1994, was also present during the affair as guest, being the commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Like Fajardo, Fernandez also began his career in Cebu, playing for University of San Carlos before his illustrious PBA career.
Fajardo said he was glad to meet Fernandez once again, saying he recalled the PBA legend teaching him during his days with University of Cebu.
“Legend siya. Grabe ‘yung pinakita niya sa PBA. Nakakatuwa kasi tinuruan niya ako sa Cebu. ‘Yung advise niya, wag ako magpalaki ng husto. Dapat hindi malaki katawan ko masyado,” said Fajardo.
Fajardo shared that he was trying to emulate Fernandez’s moves during his younger days, but admitted it was very tough to do.
”Elegant shot lang,” Fajardo said. ”Mahirap eh. ’Yun ang signature niya.“
Fajardo said he is glad to follow Fernandez’s footsteps with San Miguel.
”Privilege ko na masundan ‘yung nasimulan niya. Thankful ako na nagkita uli kami,” said Fajardo.
