DESPITE showing the way in the race for the season Most Valuable Player award, June Mar Fajardo reiterated his ultimate desire is to win a championship with San Miguel and not to reap any individual award.
“Mas gusto ko mag-champion kesa individual award kasi sa championship, masaya lahat,” said the 6-foot-10 San Miguel big man after scoring a PBA career-high 28 points and 18 rebounds in leading the Beermen to a 97-92 victory over Rain or Shine Friday night in the Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Fajardo currently leads the MVP race with 24.4 statistical points after the league’s first two conferences to maintain his grip on the top spot heading to the season-ending tournament.
But the big man out of University of Cebu felt winning a first-ever MVP trophy in the pro league wouldn’t be gratifying if he’s the only one who would be happy.
“Aanhin ko ang individual awards kung ako lang ang masaya?” he said.
With his team-first mentality, the young big man said he intends to do everything he can every game day to help San Miguel go deep in the playoffs and hopefully, make a return trip to the Finals this conference.
“Mas gusto ko maging team player kesa individual player. Sa akin, basta gagawin ko lahat matulungan ko lang ang team ko,” he added.
Fajardo said part of his aggressive stance this conference involves taking the ball strong to the hoop, instead of faking off his defender from 10-feet and taking a jump shot.
“Sabi kasi nila coach dapat pagpasok ko sa loob, huwag na mag-jump shot. So iyun lang ang ginagawa ko,” noted Fajardo, referring to his strong inside plays.
The Beermen though will get another acid test when they face grand slam-seeking San Mig Super Coffee on Sunday at the Mall of Asian Arena in a rematch of last season’s Governors Cup Finals protagonists.
