HIS sights may be dead set on leading his team to an unprecedented feat, but June Mar Fajardo also has his eyes on another piece of history.
The anchor of San Miguel Beer's unprecedented four-peat championship bid in the PBA Philippine Cup is poised to become the first player in the league to win the Best Player of the Conference award six times.
"Goal namin mag-champion pero kung maipanalo (ang BPC), sobrang blessed," Fajardo said after his team's 92-77 win in Game Two of the Philippine Cup Finals that tied the series at one game apiece.
Once he wins the top individual plum for the conference, the four-time reigning MVP will surpass his mentor Danny Ildefonso’s mark of five BPC awards.
"Sino mage-expect nun, 'di ba?" Fajardo said. "Ano lang ba naman ako dati? Wala akong hilig sa basketball, tapos ngayon mabe-break ko na yung record ng mga magagaling sa PBA. Nakaka-proud sa sarili."
The pride of Pinamungajan, Cebu leads the statistical points race by a mile with 44.2 average SPs after norming 22.9 points, 12.9 boards, and 1.8 blocks through the semifinals, and is also expected to get enough votes from the media, players, and the league to cement his status.
"Syempre dahil din yun sa mga teammates ko, at sa coaching staff -- 'di ko naman makukuha yun kung di dahil sa kanila," Fajardo said. "Para sa'kin, 'di lang ako yung BPC, kaming lahat."
The league will announce the BPC before Game Four next Wednesday.
