THEY have the comfortable lead in the PBA Governors Cup Finals, yet June Mar Fajardo believes San Miguel Beer needs to play with a sense of urgency against Alaska in Game Three of the best-of-seven series on Wednesday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen are halfway through winning their second conference championship of the season after taking a 2-0 lead with a 103-95 victory in Game Two on Sunday.
And Fajardo stressed his team has to keep its foot on the gas pedal to avoid giving the Aces any sort of confidence.
“Kailangan namin i-treat yung next game na do-or-die,” the SMB star slotman said. “Baka pag nanalo sila sa next game, ma-transfer yung momentum sa kanila at baka mag-tuloy-tuloy. Ayaw namin mangyari yun.”
No team has ever climbed out of a 3-0 hole in a best-of-seven championship series.
Fajardo, who registered 18 points, 17 boards, and three blocks in just 33 minutes in Game One, was limited to just 16, 14, and two in 38 minutes in Game Two in the face of Sonny Thoss’ defense on the same night he was named Best Player of the Conference.
"Maganda yung adjustment nila sa akin,” Fajardo, who only had four attempts from the field, admitted. “Maganda yung depensa sa akin ni Sonny. Dun talaga ako nahirapan."
The 6-foot-10 Cebuano cager was particularly shackled in the first half where he scored just three points before adding 13 in the next two quarters.
But Fajardo insists he is not always trying to find his offense as he can also be a decoy for SMB’s shooters.
"Hindi lang naman sa scoring ako makakatulong,” he said. “Pwede na ako sa rebounding, ako magke-create ng opensa.”
