ANTIPOLO – By now, June Mar Fajardo has grown accustomed to seeing San Miguel start slow in conferences.
Not that the five-time PBA MVP welcomes it.
“Mas okay ‘yung mananalo talaga,” said Fajardo after a 0-2 start to the Commissioner’s Cup by the Beermen. “Last conference ‘yun eh. Ibang conference na ‘to eh. Sana makabalik kami at makuha uli namin ‘yung rhythm namin at makabalik kami sa winning track. Bounce back hard.”
San Miguel lost to TNT, 110-97, on Saturday in game that saw the Beermen trail by as many as 24 points. The Beermen are in their second game since winning their fifth straight Philippine Cup title last month.
Last year, the Beermen started out 0-3 to begin their Commissioner's Cup campaign.
Fajardo said the loss isn’t because of championship hangover, insisting TNT simply played good and San Miguel otherwise.
“Talo lang talaga. Kailangan naming mag-step up. Sabi nga ni coach, marami pa kaming games na lalaruin. Hindi pa kami out sa conference. May chance kami makabawi. Kailangan lang naman mag-step up lahat,” said Fajardo.
Fajardo had 13 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks while going up mostly against TNT import and former NBA player Terrence Jones, who had 30 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocks.
Fajardo expressed confidence San Miguel will be able to snap out of the slump with the Beermen having enough time to prepare for a game against Blackwater on Friday.
“Basta kailangan namin makabalik sa winning track. May mga ilang araw pa naman kami na practice. Kailangan namin mag-step up at manalo uli,” said Fajardo.
