SAN Miguel Beer pulled off a 106-94 victory over GlobalPort on Tuesday, but it was not enough to keep the Beermen in contention for a playoff berth in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
June Mar Fajardo finished with 31 points and 19 rebounds in another dominant effort while Alex Cabagnot sealed the match with two three-pointers with 43 seconds left as the Beermen ended a disappointing campaign on a high note.
The Beermen, however, needed a 32-point winning margin to have a chance at a playoff berth. Instead they ended up tied for the ninth to 11th spot with GlobalPort and KIA on 4-7 records, just months after rulling the Philippine Cup.
San Miguel's win gave Barako Bull a free ride to the playoffs. The Energy beat NLEX, 91-85, in the day's opening game to finish the single-round eliminations at 5-6.
“It’s a nice win for us to end our second conference. But it’s very unfortunate for us because we struggled in the first few games namin, though I’m happy to end this conference on a winning note,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.
Unlike San Miguel, GlobalPort still has a chance to grab the eighth and last spot in the playoffs if Barangay Ginebra beats Alaska at the end of the eliminations on Wednesday.
In the event Alaska, GlobalPort, KIA and SMB end up tied for the 8th to 11 spots at 4-7, the Batang Pier will get the last ticket to the playoffs by virtue of a higher tiebreak quotient (+33).
KIA only has a +13 quotient, SMB a -17 and Alaska a -29.
Arizona Reid had 20 points and five rebounds for San Miguel while Chris Ross added 15.
Derrick Caracter led the Batang Pier with 18 points and 19 rebounds while Terrence Romeo chipped in 15, although he shot just 5-of-19 from the field overall.
