JUNE Mar Fajardo played down his career effort in San Miguel Beer’s 103-97 loss to Alaska in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday night.

The reigning back-to-back league MVP set a new career-high of 43 points on top of hauling down 20 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals to become the first local in league history to record a 40-20 game since Asi Taulava did the feat in 2003.

“Syempre mas maganda kung nanalo kami,” Fajardo said. “Hindi naman importante sa akin yung record. Ang imporante sa amin manalo kasi crucial game 'yun eh."

Still, it was a remarkable effort for the SMB superstar, who made 13 of his 20 shots and all but one of his 18 charities in 38 minutes as he carried his team on his back.

“Kailangan lang talaga umiskor eh,” Fajardo said. “Pero dala na rin siguro ng free throws kasi lagi nila ako fina-foul.”

The performance, however, went for naught as the Beermen failed to convert their shots when it mattered most as they saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.

“Namintis lang namin yung crucial shots namin nung last two minutes,” Fajardo said. “Usually napapasok namin yun. Maganda din kasi depensa nila.”
