HE’s a man among boys and he’s running out of challengers in the PBA, so is it time for June Mar Fajardo to test the international waters?
In only his fourth season in the league and at 26, the San Miguel Beer superstar has already captured three MVPs in a record same number of years and is bound to not just match but surpass the record haul of four-time MVPs Mon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio.
Notwithstanding the championships that he craves more, Fajardo believes there are still plenty of individual challenges left in the Asia’s first professional league.
“Mayroon pa rin (challenge),” the ever-humble Fajardo, who also won the Sportsmanship award for the second straight year, insisted in a short chat with SPIN.ph on Friday night after the awards ceremony.
“Keep improving lang kasi hindi natin alam na baka next conference, may darating na naman na malakas na player,” the 6-foot-10 center added after winning the top individual plum over Jayson Castro and Calvin Abueva.
But that remains to be seen and until then, the four-time Best Player of the Conference is keeping the door open for a stint overseas, including in the NBA, as he is only entering the prime of his career.
There’s definitely a chance for a Filipino to ply their trade abroad after Castro received an offer from a team in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and the shy Fajardo, at least, is finally open to possibility of playing overseas.
“Wala naman (nag-ooffer sa’kin) eh, pero pag may opportunity, titingnan natin,” Fajardo said. “Syempre opportunity yan eh.”
“Sana (mayroon mag-offer). Nandyan lang naman ako sa bahay,” the pride of Pinamungahan, Cebu pride ended with a smile.
