JUNE Mar Fajardo seems he could do anything he wanted on Wednesday night in San Miguel Beer’s 102-86 rout of Mahindra in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The SMB superstar scored at will, missing just four of his 17 shots for a blistering 76.5 percent behind an array of moves to almost match his career high, while grabbing 12 rebounds.
He also flashed his playmaking skills, particularly in one play when he led a fastbreak play and dished out a no-look pass to Bitoy Omolon, who, however, seemed surprised by the feed that he was called for steps.
“Tinry ko lang kung ano feeling maging point guard,” Fajardo said with a smile. “Masarap pala. Nakakatuwa pala.”
While stressing he won’t do it regularly, the 6-foot-10 slotman said he won’t hesitate to do it again when there’s an opportunity.
“Mas komportable ako sa poste,” Fajardo said. “Pero pag may chance, paminsan-minsan.”
“Pero hindi naman every game gagawin kasi baka mawalan ng trabaho yung mga point guard namin,” he added in jest.
The reigning league MVP was in the zone against the Enforcers as he had been perfect from the field (10-of-10) and the charity stripe (9-of-9) until he missed a left-corner jumper off a broken play with less than five minutes left in the third quarter.
“Wala, nasa malapit kasi ako eh, kailangan ipasok kasi score din yun eh, sayang,” Fajardo said on his near-perfect night. “Dapat pag tira, hindi mo kailangan madaliin. Bahala na ma-blanka ka basta mabitawan mo ng maayos.”
The Cebuano center insisted he was hardly concerned of breaking his career high in scoring.
“Okay na yun para mabigyan naman ng minutes mga kakampi ko,” he said. “Basta manalo kami, yung ang imporatante.”
