June Mar Fajardo thrilled to rejoin SMB teammates in online workouts

JUNE Mar Fajardo took a step closer in his injury comeback by rejoining the San Miguel Beermen in their online workouts.

Fajardo is still recovering from the fractured tibia he sustained early last year which forced him to sit out the league's lone conference during the COVID-19 pandemic held at Clark. His recovery was also set back by an infection.

San Miguel team manager Gee Abanilla bared Fajardo has started showing up for Zoom workouts after the Beermen's practices in small groups were called off due to Metro Manila being put under a hard lockdown last month.

Although no time table has been set on the return to practice, the Beermen camp is now more upbeat about Fajardo’s comeback.

“May rehab exercises at program siya specifically prepared by our head PT [physical therapist]. In fact, paminsan-minsan, sumasabay din siya sa mga Zoom workouts namin,” said Abanilla.

“I think ‘yung pag-push back ng resumption of the league ay nakatulong sa preparation niya,” he said.

Fajardo said he's happy to rejoin his teammates in training, even just online.

"Masaya ako na kahit sa Zoom lang, nakakasama ko na ulit yung team," he said. "Miss na namin lahat maglaro, lalo na ako dahil ang tagal ko na ring nabakante, pero di natin alam yung situation ngayon at ingat na lang tayo lahat para maging ok na ulit."

Asked to assess his rehab, Fajardo said: "Okay na ako, pero syempre maingat pa rin."

With Fajardo out, the Beermen bowed out at the quarterfinal stage during the PBA bubble at Clark, losing a Philippine Cup championship that they had won the five previous seasons.

Abanilla said San Miguel has stepped up its online training in anticipation of the resumption of team practices by May 15, most likely in Batangas.

“Right now, we are training via Zoom five to six times a week with specific instructions from our strength coaches to prepare the players for a possible May 15 resumption of training,” said Abanilla.
