JUNE Mar Fajardo is a man of his word.
After virtually guaranteeing San Miguel Beer would win their PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinal matchup against Meralco, the league reigning MVP made good on his promise by leading the Beermen to a 102-86 win in the deciding game on Monday night.
“June Mar promised us that we will win,” Beermen coach Leo Austria said. “At makikita mo sa mata niya na he’s determined to play well.”
“I’m happy na we have a player like him na he’s not just playing, but he’s there to win.”
Fajardo asserted his presence in the paint as he tallied 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, 16 boards, two blocks, and one steal in 38 minutes.
“Pinakita lang namin sa kanya na gusto namin manalo,” the back-to-back MVP frontrunner said in reference to his soft-spoken coach.
Fajardo also deflected credit to his teammates for rising to the occasion after their backs went against the wall following a shock loss last Saturday.
“Nag-step up kami lahat, especially sa depensa namin,” Fajardo said as his team limited the Bolts to 44 percent shooting after allowing them to make 52 percent of their shots the last time.
After all, Fajardo didn’t want history to repeat itself as the Beermen once lost a twice-to-beat advantage in the 2014 Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals against Cinderella team Air21.
“Natakot nga ako eh kasi ayaw ko matulad yung sa Air21 dati eh,” the Cebuano slotman said. “Hindi ko makakalimutan yun eh.”
