JUNE MAR Fajardo refused to take the credit for San Miguel Beer’s victory over sister team Ginebra, stressing his showdown with Greg Slaughter has been so played out that it has eclipsed the team’s huge effort.
Fajardo came up with 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Beermen on 9-of-19 shooting including crucial baskets against Slaughter to lift his team to a 79-77 win over the Gin Kings in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday.
But Fajardo downplayed talk that he dominated Slaughter and that it was the main reason the Beermen won.
“Maganda rin naman ’yung pinakita ni Greg,” said Fajardo. “Nahirapan din ako kay Greg. Hindi ko nga halos na-shoot ’yung iba eh.”
Slaughter actually had a good stat line with 16 points and 18 rebounds on 6-of-13 shooting, but Ginebra trailed early and couldn’t complete a comeback from 15 points down, no thanks to other Beermen including Arwind Santos who scored a team-high 22 points.
“Buti nag-step up ’yung mga kakampi ko. Maganda rin ’yun para sa team,” said Fajardo.
Fajardo admitted the victory was also sweet against the league’s most popular team and doing it with an all-Filipino lineup.
“Nanalo sila nung last time. At may import ’yung dati. Pero buti ’yung apat na free throws ni Arwind, crucial din ’yun,” said Fajardo.
“It’s not all about Greg at sa akin. It’s about the team,” said Fajardo.
