ANTIPOLO – June Mar Fajardo admitted Ken Bono proved to be a tough matchup for him in San Miguel Beer’s 103-97 win over Meralco in their PBA Philippine Cup matchup on Wednesday night.
Although he finished with 26 points, the reigning MVP Fajardo scored just two points in the third quarter where Bono was inserted for the first time to put a body on the 6-foot-10 slotman as the Bolts closed the gap.
“Bigat nya eh, tapos malaki din,” Fajardo said of the 6-foot-3 Bono, who made up for his lack of his length with his heft. “Magagaling din naman talaga sila.”
Bono also made a significant contribution on offense as the former UAAP MVP scored all his eight points in the second half – making all his four attempts mostly on mid-range jumpers off the pick.
“Alam naman natin na kaya niya mag-extend at gumamit ng pick-and-pop,” Fajardo said. “Maganda nilaro niya, maganda pagkakahugot sa kanya. Respect.”
The Beermen, though, still emerged victorious after Fajardo and the rest of the starting Fab Five, as well as some shock troopers, turned it on.
“Pag nae-execute namin yung plays, pag na-swing yung bola at umaabot sa kabilang corner, yun na yun,” Fajardo said. “Tiwala lang din sa sarili. Maganda lang din ang nilaro ng players namin, mga guards namin, shooters namin. Nagstep up si Von (Pessumal). Malaking bagay sa amin yun.”
“Maganda para sa amin ito kasi matatapos namin yung taon na panalo,” he added of their 2-0 start. “Hopefully, magtuloy-tuloy lang kami. I-enjoy namin yung New Year then dapat manage namin yung puyat kasi may games pa kaming darating.”
