IN a tightly-fought game, missed free throws could really make a difference.
And so a puzzled Talk ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico rued his team’s woeful performance from the foul line Tuesday night that led to the Tropang Texters’ heartbreaking 96-95 loss to San Miguel Beer in Game Three of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals.
The loss pushed the telecommunication franchise on the brink of being swept in the best-of-seven series.
“Could be fatigue, but I have no answers to that one (poor free throw shooting in the game),” said Uichico, obviously referring to the team’s poor 12-of-26 shooting from the free throw line.
“I know we can shoot free throws, but we just missed a lot, we missed 12 shots in one game (Game 2) and then in today’s game,” Uichico said.
“That (free throw conversions) could have made a difference in the game. So we practice foul shots (again).”
The Tropang Texters have never been down 0-3 in a series.
Now, Uichico admitted things have become tougher for this team, especially since the Talk ‘N Text is having a hard time containing San Miguel’s armada of gunners, who have supported big man June Mar Fajardo very well in the series.
“The last game (Game 2), it’s (Alex) Cabagnot (who played well). Then today, it’s another. They (Beermen) have so many poisons eh, so we just have to do the best we can in containing everyone because they made shots,” he added.
Uichico said while the players will be taking a day off on Wednesday, he and the rest of the coaching staff will be studying game tapes and try to find ways how to beat a powerhouse Beermen in Game 4 set on Friday.
