JONG Uichico is staying put at NLEX.
The veteran and champion coach has been included in the Road Warriors’ coaching staff under new mentor Jimmy Alapag.
Uichico, 63, served as coach of the franchise for two years until he was replaced by Alapag upon the expiration of his contract prior to the start of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.
He becomes the senior assistant coach of the Road Warriors along with Adonis Tierra and Jamike Jarin. Also part of the staff are first assistant Borgie Hermida, Emman Monfort, Melo Lim, Jorge Sison, Woody Co, and Anton Escolin.
Uichico previously served as deputy to Frankie Lim before assuming the head coaching job at NLEX.
But even before Alapag took over, the coaching transition within the organization was already rolling with TNT deputy coach Josh Reyes supposed to transfer at NLEX to become Uichico’s alternate before eventually assuming the position as head coach.
The plan was eventually discarded as management decided to just groom one of its young deputy coaches to become Uichico’s successor, which turned out to be Hermida.
That was until Alapag became available and named to the position.
Uichico is the latest head coach to slide down to an assistant role after Jorge Gallent of San Miguel and Jarin with Phoenix Super LPG.
