TALK ‘N Text coach Jong Uichico played down Ivan Johnson’s sub-par showing, insisting it was poor defense and turnovers that doomed the Tropang Texters in a 101-93 loss to Rain or Shine in Game Six of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
Johnson, who came in averaging 27.9 points this conference, was held to a measly six points — his lowest output in the pro league — on just nine attempts in 32 minutes.
“Of course, you give credit to what Rain or Shine did (on defense) and the adjustments they made (against Johnson),” Uichico said. “But I don’t think it was that.
“We just gave up too many points off an up-and-down game and we turned the ball over a lot.”
The Texters allowed the Painters to score 15 fastbreak points and committed 15 errors that ROS translated into 15 points.
“They had too many layups, while I don’t think we got as much,” Uichico said.
“They (Texters) gave effort, but Rain or Shine showed more effort,” the soft-spoken mentor added.
