WONDERING why Jonathan Grey was the only PBA draft applicant without D-League experience this year whose application was voided?
The College of St. Benilde star didn’t attend the two-day Draft Combine that ended on Thursday as he was declared ineligible due to his lack of experience in the fledgling league.
The PBA earlier required rookie hopefuls to have played in the D-League, seven games in one conference for locals and seven games in two tournaments for Filipino-foreigners.
Grey was drafted in the D-League this year by Cagayan Valley, but never played a single minute with the Rising Suns.
But there are other rookie hopefuls, namely: Ryan Wetherell, Carlo Gatmaitan and Milan Vargas of St. Clare, and Australia-based Dale Hodges, who have never seen action in the D-League, yet have been allowed to enter the draft.
League deputy commissioner Rickie Santos explained on Friday all of them are over 27 years old, or beyond the age limit of 26 in the D-League.
Santos, though, said over-age players can still play in the developmental league even if they’re already free agents.
