THE NLEX coaching staff draws confidence from seeing head coach Yeng Guiao entrust the team's fate in their heads whenever the latter is ejected from a game.

Guiao was sent off for the second time this conference on Wednesday following two successive technical fouls but NLEX still managed to take the win over Alaska, 91-70, in absence of the concurrent Team Pilipinas head coach.

“It was the second time na ginawa niya ‘yun,” NLEX assistant coach Jojo Lastimosa, who handled the team in the absence of Guiao, said. “Usually kapag hindi mo mapigilan, nagrereklamo ‘yung coach, may time ka na pigilan siya. Kanina, there was no time na puwede lagyan ng kamay ‘yung mouth ni coach.”

Lastimosa, who also coaches Bataan in the MPBL, said the coaching staff has learned to handle the team even without Guiao.

“The thing is, si coach Yeng he doesn’t do anything that is not calculated. If he wants to get thrown out, there is always a reason. Maybe one of the reasons was he has so much trust in his staff. It’s a big confidence booster on the coaching staff."

NLEX big man JR Quinahan said he is already used to Guiao getting thrown out, but observed that there are little changes to how the team is ran once Guiao leaves.

“Sa part ko sanay na ako, maraming beses na,” said Quinahan, who also played for Guiao when he was still the coach of Rain or Shine.

On what changes happen to the team after Guiao’s ejection, Quinahan said in jest: “Sa mga kasama ko, baka nababawasan ‘yung kaba nila para di na sila mamura. Ako sanay na ako kay coach.”

Turning serious, Quinahan said: “Walang binabago eh. Run the system of coach Yeng. ‘Yun lang. Walang binabago doon.”

Lastimosa is glad Guiao has the full confidence in the coaching staff.

“Pag wala man siya, kampante pa rin siya na we are still going to do the job. I think that’s what happened (last Wednesday),” said Lastimosa.
