Reigning IBF flyweight champ Johnriel Casimero talks to PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa after watching the Governors Cup game between Barangay Ginebra and Phoenix at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, Jerome Ascano

JOHNRIEL Casimero has one wish upon returning victorious in the country following a successful title defense of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title last Sunday at the 02 Arena in London.

The Filipino boxing champion wants to personally meet no less than President Duterte.

“Gusto ko siyang makilala tsaka makita sa personal,” said the 26-year-old Casimero Wednesday night at ringside of the Ynares Center in Antipolo City where he was feted by the PBA during the second game between Barangay Ginebra and Phoenix.

“Idol ko kasi siya talaga,” added the native of Ormoc, Leyte, who admitted voting Duterte during the last Presidential elections.

Casimero’s promoter Sammy Gello-ani disclosed his team is trying to arrange at least a courtesy call with Duterte at Malacanang, following Casimero’s 10th round technical knockout of British fighter Charlie Edwards in the undercard of the Genady Golovkin-Kell Brooks world middleweight championship fight.

“We’re thinking of that,” said Gello-ani of arranging a meeting with the country’s Chief Executive.

Although more identified with Davao, which has been home to the family since the 1950s, the Dutertes actually hail from Cebu. The President himself was born in Maasin, Leyte.

“Bisaya rin siya (Duterte), kaya mag-usap kami ng Bisaya,” said Casimero.

The victory of Casimero over Edwards was his first defense of the 112-lbs. title belt which he won over Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand with a fourth-round knockout in Beijing, China last May.

His current record stands at 23-3, with 15 KOs.
