ANTIPOLO – Columbian coach Johnedel Cardel lauded the performance of his team even after coming up short of pulling off an upset against TNT on Saturday in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
The Dyip lost to the KaTropa, 125-120, during the Petron Saturday Special but not before making their opponents earn the victory. They trailed by as many as 14 points, but stayed around until the final seconds of the game.
“Sabi ko sa kanila, it’s okay to lose to this TNT team. It’s the better team for now. I told them, lumaban naman tayo. We have a good game even though we lost,” said Cardel.
The Dyip were led by Khapri Alston, who had 38 points and 13 rebounds, while Rashawn McCarthy and CJ Perez had 26 and 23 points each for the team in a gallant stand against the top team, so far, this conference.
Despite their performance, Cardel rued their bad start that forced the Dyip to play catch up in the second half.
“We had a bad first half. Lack of defense, masyadong mataas ang score. But in the third quarter, we started playing defense. We caught up at nagkaroon kami ng chance manalo,” said Cardel.
Cardel said there is still a feeling of regret that they were unable to pull off the upset over TNT.
“It was a big game for us. Sayang. Talagang very deep ‘yung line-up ng TNT. Very organized sila. They have a lot of good players. It’s okay to lose to a better team,” said Cardel.
Cardel said the TNT game is definitely a learning experience for the KaTropa moving forward in their campaign in the Governors’ Cup.
“Of course, they have a lot of shooters. Troy, even si Trollano, Pogoy, and of course Jayson Castro. We took away ‘yung scoring ni Troy pero ‘yun pa rin, babalik pa rin sa depensa especially sa last two minutes. We took away the import but the shooters hit big shots. Still, may chance pa rin kami.”
“Hindi namin nakuha pero sabi namin sa kanila, this is a game that we watch and learn from it para hindi uli maulit,” said Cardel.
Cardel expressed confidence that the Dyip will heed his call as they take a two-day rest before resuming back into their preparations in their next games.
“We’ll learn from our mistakes. Hopefully, this coming Friday vs. Blackwater and next Wednesday vs. NLEX, maka-bounce back kami para at least nandoon pa rin kami sa goal namin,” said Cardel.
