AGAINST an NLEX squad that was missing its main big men, Blackwater’s frontcourt was favored to take the upperhand.
But it was a 5-foot-11 guard that stood tallest.
John Pinto corralled 13 rebounds, the most by any player in the game, on top of six points and three assists to help Blackwater nip a shorthanded NLEX side.
Pinto said he himself was surprised to see the figures, but said what was on his mind was simply to do everything he can to help the Elite halt a two-game skid.
"Siguro natapat lang, aggressive lang ako," said Pinto.
The Blackwater playmaker had two more rebounds than 6-foot-4 forward Sean Anthony, who was left to man the paint in the absence of ailing Asi Taulava and injured Rico Villanueva.
"Nabigla rin ako kasi pumupunta sakin bola e. Gina-grab ko lang kung ano makukuha ko sa team."
"Sabi ni coach (Leo Isaac) na as a point guard kailangan kahit di ako maka-shoot basta madala ko lang yung team at mabigay ko yung tamang opensa para sa team. Ginagawa ko lang."
It remains to be seen if Pinto can do it consistently, like Ginebra’s Scottie Thompson. But Isaac notes Pinto can do much more than what he has shown so far, simply because he works hard.
"Surprised ako pero nakikita na namin sa first four games na ganung klaseng attitude. He goes for the offensive boards, he fights for the rebound maski malalaki ang kalaban," Isaac said of Pinto.
"Yung energy nya naipapakita nya ngayon. He's getting enough minutes to showcase his skills and he's happy with his role. We expect him to further improve."
