JIMMY Alapag was finally awarded the basketball on Sunday night, symbolic of him being the PBA’s newest all-time leader in three points made.
The special rite was made just before the second half of Game Two of the Governors Cup finals between Meralco and Barangay Ginebra.
Alapag was joined on centercourt by wife LJ Moreno and their two children shortly after being given the historic ball by commissioner Chito Narvasa.
The 38-year-old point guard officially broke the 17-year mark held by the great Allan Caidic at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter for his 1,243 career three-pointers.
He was tied with Caidic at 1,242 entering the game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Thank You ALL for the kind words regarding the 3pt record,” said Alapag on his Twitter account@JAlapag3 after tying the record. “Honored to be w/ the legendary and GOAT Allan Caidic. @trggrmn #Respect
Too bad, the Kings spoiled the historic night after dealing the Bolts an 82-79 loss later to tie the best-of-seven title series at 1-1.
Alapag didn't hide his desire to have the victory rather than the record.
"Would've rather had the win 2nyt, but thankful for ALL ur kind words/msgs," he tweeted later. "Time to recharge, refocusn get ready for Game 3. Much love!'
