BOCAUE, Bulacan - Talk N Text star point guard Jimmy Alapag said he just needs a break from playing too much basketball the past couple of months.
And how long he will stay off the game, the former PBA MVP really has no idea.
“How long, I don't know. I will have to talk to coach Jong (Uichico) and the coaching staff,” said Alapag, who sat out the Tropang Texters’ 101-81 loss to Barangay Ginebra Kings during the PBA Philippine Cup opener on Sunday at the Philippine Arena.
“But knowing me, that's not too long for sure.”
The Gilas mainstay said he just needed time away from play as he spent the past grueling months playing for the national team in the Fiba World Cup in Spain to the Asian Games in South Korea.
“I just need a break,” he said.
“In the mental aspect, it was really heavy the (past) three months from Fiba to the Asian Games,” he added. “So I just really need a break.”
With Alapag expected to sit out a few more games of the Tropang Texters, rookie Kevin Alas has taken the chores left behind by the veteran point guard.
And while the guard out of Letran has yet to prove himself, Alapag already gave a thumbs up on how good the rookie player is.
“He's really talented. After training I was getting some quality time with Kevin, and I'm happy that he's in the team,” said Alapag.
“He's a great player, he has great work ethic,” he added of Alas, who finished with 10 points in his pro debut.
