JERVY Cruz didn't know what was more terrifying: breaking a bone on his big toe after a freak accident at home or breaking the bad news to temperamental coach Yeng Guiao.

The Rain or Shine forward needed almost a day and the help of a 'padrino' before he could inform Guiao of the injury he sustained on Wednesday while trying to transfer a 42-inch, flat-screen television set at home in Munoz, Quezon City.

Afraid of how his fiery mentor would react to the injury that ended his season, Cruz told Spin.ph he sought the help of Rain or Shine assistant coach Caloy Garcia to break the grim news to Guiao.

Natatakot ako,” he added.

The scrappy Guimba, Nueva Ecija pride narrated he was trying to transfer his old television set to a new location when it slipped from his hands and fell on his left big toe, fracturing a bone.

Bad trip nga,” said the former University of Santo Tomas star.

Garcia for his part bared how a terrified Cruz called him up at 9 p.m. on Wednesday to tell him of the development.

“Kabado nga siya kasi he knows he plays a part sa team namin. Kasi nga shooter siya na big man, he could have extended the defense. Kanina, pwede niya sana kami tulungan kasi nag-zona sila (San Miguel),” said Garcia.

"But then wala na tayo magagawa, nangyari na eh. We just have to rely on the players we have,” he added.

Guiao, meanwhile, accepted the apology of Cruz but made no effort to hide his disappointment, especially after Rain or Shine dropped Game One of their Governors Cup semifinal series to San Miguel Beer.

“Tingin ko kasi, something like that could've been avoided. Of course, disappointed ako dahil nagkulang kami. Especially kailangan namin ng mga bigs. He could have helped us,” said Guiao.
