RAIN or Shine rookie guard Jeric Teng is eager to keep his roster spot amid concerns he might be dropped by the Elasto Painters to the PBA expansion draft at the end of the season.
Following the league board’s decision to adopt the 'Protect 12’ scheme for the expansion draft for new franchises Kia Motors, Blackwater Sports, and NLEX, some fringe players are expected to be dropped to the expansion pool and possibly end up with any of the new teams.
Teng, however, wants to stay where he is right now.
“I’m happy with Rain or Shine. Mga teammates ko at coaches, lahat sila mababait talaga,” Teng told Spin.ph on Tuesday night during the PEP List Awards Night at Solaire.
But after playing limited minutes last conference, the gunner is keen to prove his worth to coach Yeng Guiao.
“I know na deep 'yung bench namin. I just have to keep practicing and wait for my opportunity. Darating naman yan eh,” the University of Santo Tomas product said.
“Sinabi naman sa amin ni coach Yeng na huwag kami magmamadali. I just have to be patient.”
Under the current scheme, each team is allowed to keep 14 players in its active roster, while two others are on the reserve list.
But before next season, players outside the 12 that each team will opt to protect will go to an expansion pool from where Kia, Blackwater, and NLEX will pick one after the other.
Teng, of course, would rather not having anything to do with the draft.
Teng, who missed the Elasto Painters’ 96-103 opening day loss to Air21 in the Governors' Cup, is raring to return from a patellar tendinitis injury in his knee to prove his worth once Guiao gives him the chance.
“Syempre 'yun talaga yung gusto kong mangyari. I have to keep practicing hard at pag binigyan ako ng opportunity talaga, I’ll take it.”
