GLOBALPORT looked bent on forming a consistent playoff contender for the coming PBA season.
Just a few months after acquiring high-scoring guard Joseph Yeo, the Mikee Romero-owned franchise is again putting in more building blocks in a bid to improve on its best-ever Top 4 finish in the last Governors' Cup eliminations.
Sources told Spin.ph that GlobalPort management is now negotiating with Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel Beer to acquire veteran big man Dorian Pena and former University of Santo Tomas star guard Jeric Fortuna.
The Batang Pier, sources said, are set to send a future second-round pick to San Miguel in exchange for Fortuna to set the stage for the former UAAP standout's reunion with college coach Pido Jarencio.
On the other hand, Pena is set to be shipped by Ginebra to GlobalPort in exchange for hard-banging Jewel Ponferrada, who is seen to fit the need for a versatile big man in new coach Tim Cone's triangle offense.
They Said It!
“Magaling naman si Fortuna eh, wala lang playing time sa SMB kasi Ross at Cabagnot yung kapalitan n'ya eh. Ok na ring matrade s'ya." - Darren Donor
In contrast, Pena in expected to struggle in the new Ginebra offense but can fill GlobalPort's need for a reliable big man who can complement star guards Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle.
"We are now negotiating to get Dorian. He'll be an asset to us. Beterano na 'yan and he is a proven presence inside the paint," said the source.
Fortuna is a third-string guard at San Miguel who can be an odd man out if plans to get Brian Heruela, June Mar Fajardo's college teammate from the University of Cebu, push through.
Actually, Fortuna is not the only former player of Jarencio in college who GlobalPort is eyeing.
The Batang Pier are also eyeing Barako Bull's Dylan Ababou, who is seen as a perfect back-up to the current GlobalPort Big Three of Romeo, Pringle and Yeo.
