Pain not a barrier as Jeff Chan does a 'Willis Reed' for under-fire Rain or Shine

    Apr 26, 2015

RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao heard his phone ring on Saturday night while in the middle of watching a movie with his family in Angeles City.

But the 56-year-old family man didn’t mind answering, despite missing a part of 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' film.

After all, the call was from Rain or Shine gunner Jeff Chan, who delivered a piece of news on the eve of Game Six of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals against Talk ‘N Text that was music to his coach's ears.

Earlier declared out for the rest of their series due to a torn plantar fasciitis on his right foot, the star guard informed his coach he wanted to give it another go after getting the green light from doctors.

“Tumawag ako sa kanya (Guiao), 'May go-signal naman kay doc, so I’ll try,' sabi ko,” Chan said. “Pwede daw ako mag-risk, kasi two games lang daw. Kaso may pain.”

The pride of Bacolod found a way to contribute despite the pain, scoring 11 points in  the middle quarters in 11 minutes to help the Painters force a do-or-die Game Seven after a 101-93 win on Sunday night.

More than his offensive contribution, the former FEU gunner's mere presence on the court pumped up a Rain or Shine side whose back was against the wall, following an example by New York Knicks hero Willis Reed.

“Sobarang sakit kanina, hindi ko na matapak, kasi every time na mag-explode ako (for a drive),  na-fe-feel ko yung punit, very painful," said the Gilas Pilipinas mainstay.

“But I’ll do anything para makatulong sa team ko,” added Chan, who vowed to try again in the deciding game on Wednesday.

Paul Lee, another banged-up Painter, said he was motivated to suck up the pain after seeing Chan play.

"Marami na rin akong nararamdaman, pero siya, punit 'yung talampakan niya, pero naglaro siya, so parang naangat pa niya 'yung (morale) ko. Nakakuha kami ng lakas ng loob sa kanya.”

For sure, Guiao had no regrets answering the call.

“He’s just trying to show the rest of the team that he really wanted to make a contribution and even in pain, he wanted to help the team,” the Pampanga representative said. “He gave us a big boost.”
