RULED out for the rest of the title series, injured gunner Jeff Chan could only watch helplessly as Rain or Shine dropped Games Four and Five to Talk ‘N Text to fall on the brink in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
Chan said he saw through the body language of the Elasto Painters who he felt did not have the sense of urgency to stop the Tropang Texters from seizing a 3-2 series lead following a 103-94 win on Friday.
“Sana mag-stick sila (Elasto Painters) to the game plan. Ibigay nila yung best nila dahil finals ito. Hindi lang ito regular game na matalo ka, okay lang. Dapat ang mindset mo mag-champion talaga,” said Chan.
The left-handed former Far Eastern University shooter averaged 12.3 points and 45.5 percent shooting from the three-point zone in the first three games before sitting out due to a possible torn right plantar fascia.
Chan said he would have played in Games Four and Five, but the pain in his left heel was no longer bearable for the past days even with the help of anesthesia.
“Nag-try ako magpa-injection and nag-work siya, pero after that namamaga dahil nabubugbog,” recalled Chan. “Pero sa third game, pagtapak ko after ko mag-drive, masakit na siya kahit may anesthesia.”
Chan underwent an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan on Friday morning. Regardless of the result, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao has already ruled out the Gilas Pilipinas mainstay from the remainder of the Finals.
“Wala na si Jeff sa Finals. But I’m not even mentioning that anymore because we don’t want to give an excuse,” said Guiao.
With the 32-year-old Chan out of the title series, the Elasto Painters will now have to rely on his deep guard rotation that also includes Jonathan Uyloan, rookie Jericho Cruz and Jeric Teng.
