JEFF Chan beat the shotclock with a clutch jumper as Rain or Shine held off a Barangay Ginebra comeback, 88-84, in Game One of their PBA Commissioner's Cup quarterfinal playoff on Sunday night.
The Elasto Painters climbed out of a huge 19-point hole early in the second quarter, before outsteadying the Gin Kings into a see-saw battle to take Game One of the best-of-three series.
Chan buried the biggest basket down the stretch, hitting on a clutch jumper from the left wing that gave the E-Painters a two-possession lead in the waning seconds.
“It’s a hard struggle every time we play Ginebra in the playoffs,” RoS coach Yeng Guiao said. “But we just really kept our focus, played it possession per possession, and just hung in there.”
The E-Painters can finish the Gin Kings off in Game Two on Tuesday at the Big Dome.
Chan finished with 15 points as he sustained his recent fine play, while JR Quinahan continued to provide the E-Painters a huge spark of the bench with 17 points and six boards in 20 minutes.
The balanced local attack was enough to make up for import Pierre Henderson-Niles’ so-so numbers as the contributed just 12 points for the second straight game along with 10 boards, two assists, and one block in 32 minutes.
LA Tenorio led the Gin Kings with 20 points in 36 minutes, but import Othyus Jeffers was held to just 12 markers on 4-of-14 shooting, 10 rebounds, and three assists in 37 minutes.
The E-Painters looked headed for a long night as they trailed 35-16, before mounting on a fightback that saw them trim the deficit to just one, 41-40, at the half after outscoring the Gin Kings, 28-14, in the second period.
