RAIN or Shine gunner Jeff Chan admitted overconfidence got the better of the team in its PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut on Sunday, where the Elasto Painters blew a 16-point lead and lost to Barako Bull, 110-106.
With the Elasto Painters rotating slowly on defense for much of the second half, Barako import Joshua Dollard stepped in and dropped 44 points, including 17 in an explosive fourth-quarter performance, to power the Energy to their first win in two starts.
“May konting relax, natalo kami nung third quarter. Siguro overconfindent. Siguro tingin namin kaya yung team, eh nag backfire sa amin,” lamented Chan, whose last-minute scoring barrage with teammate Paul Lee could not save Rain or Shine from suffering an embarrassing defeat.
A Gilas Pilipinas mainstay, Chan said given the short elimination round format of the mid-season tournament, every game is important with the Elasto Painters aiming to finish the single-round phase with at least a 7-2 (win-loss) record.
“Ngayong may mga imports eh di talaga puwede mag-relax. Dapat ang goal namin maka-seven wins. Iyun ang aim namin sa single round, so ngayon medyo mahirap iyun dahil natalo kami,” said the pride of Bacolod City.
“But we’ll work hard. Iyun pa rin ang goal namin.”
Chan also mentioned the team is not making its Philippine Cup Finals loss to San Mig Super Coffee as an excuse.
“Past is past, I mean mahirap i-overcome, pero bagong conference eh. Bagong challenge naman. Kapag iisipin mo pa rin yun (Philippine Cup Finals loss), lalo kang mahihirapan mag move on,” he added
