Barefield, Mendoza lead Blackwater in Kadayawan opener vs Phoenix

BLACKWATER opened the 2025 Kadayawan Invitational Basketball Tournament with a 94-81 victory over Phoenix on Thursday at the USEP Gym.

Sedrick Barefield waxed hot from downtown to help Blackwater pull away while Jed Mendoza made a big impression in their victory over Phoenix.

Sedrick Barefield had 28 points on 6-of-13 from three-point range. He made three consecutive threes for Blackwater to turn a 72-66 lead into an 81-68 advantage to pull away from Phoenix.

Mendoza, vying for a spot with Blackwater after being left unsigned by Magnolia during the offseason, also made a good account of himself in the contest by scoring 16 points.

Troy Mallillin added 17 points and six rebounds for Blackwater.

Jason Perkins and Kai Ballungay had 12 points apiece for Phoenix in the first preseason game of the Fuelmasters under new head coach Willie Wilson.

Blackwater battles NLEX on Friday, 7 p.m., while Phoenix faces Converge in the first game in the tournament being aired on the Madayaw Sports Davao Facebook page with Rey Andrew Alonsagay and coach Rocky Mejos on the mic.
