JAYSON Castro believes TNT KaTropa put up a solid defensive job on Terrence Romeo despite the GlobalPort superstar almost breaching the 30-point barrier in Game One of their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal matchup on Saturday.
Coming in norming a tournament-leading 28.7 points per game, Romeo was right around his average with 28 points, while backcourt partner Stanley Pringle added 19 markers.
But Castro was proud that the Texters limited Romeo to just 13 points in the first three quarters, before adding 15 in the final frame when the game was nearly a done deal.
“Sana ganoon pa rin ang defense namin kasi maganda ang ginawa namin sa dalawa, especially kay Terrence even if 28 points pa rin,” Castro said. “Yung defense namin, sana ma-sustain namin.”
“Yun yung focus namin on defense, na ma-limit sya, ma-challenge yung shots nya, at mawala sa kanya yung bola,” he added.
After all, when Romeo had the ball in his hands, there was something fruitful that came out if it most of time.
“Pag hawak nya yung bola, ang dami nyang nagagawa,” Castro said of his Gilas teammate, who dished out eight assists to negate his six turnovers. “Kahit ang dami nyang turnover, naiinvolve pa rin nya teammates niya.”
Castro, however, is not discounting the contribution of the Batang Pier frontline, anchored by JR Quinahan, who had 13 points and six boards in 18 minutes.
“Focus rin kami sa ibang big man nila,” Castro said.
