Jayson Castro says lapses on defense, more than fatigue, to blame for TNT letdown

ANTIPOLO CITY – Jayson Castro refused to blame wear and tear for his lackluster showing in TnT Katropa’s 112-119 loss to Globalport on Friday night in the PBA Governors Cup at the Ynares Center here.

The veteran playmaker finished with 15 points, but was held to just two points in the payoff period when the Batang Pier stepped on the gas pedal and outgunned the Katropa in a high-scoring game.

Castro, the two-time best point guard of Asia, went 5-of-12 from the floor and committed five turnovers, second to the 11 of import Glen Rice Jr.

But Castro said he’s not feeling fatigued with all this playing, including a stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the last FIBA Asia Cup in Beirut, Lebanon.

It’s the team’s lapses on the defensive end that spelled the difference in TnT’s third loss in seven outings, according to the 31-year-old native of Bacolor, Pampanga.

“Hindi naman (pagod). Nakapagpahinga na naman kami,” he said after the match.

“Ang dami lang naming lapses sa depensa. Marami kaming dapat i-correct sa defense as a team,” added Castro, noting how the Batang Pier would quickly go into transition once they get the rebound.

Globalport coach Franz Pumaren mentioned about catching a tired TnT team after playing back-to-back games in a three-day span. The Katropa beat the Blackwater Elite just last Wednesday.

Aside from Castro, also fresh from their respective Gilas stints were rookie Roger Pogoy and Troy Rosario.

He also lamented how the Katropa obviously let officiating affect their concentration.

“Sana next time yung focus namin hindi mawala,” said Castro.
