JAYSON Castro and June Mar Fajardo are neck and neck in the PBA Governors’ Cup Best Player of the Conference standings.
The TNT Katropa playmaker is slightly ahead with 40.5 average statistical points after norming 21.5 points, 7.9 assists, 3.7 boards, and 1.1 steals in 11 games.
Fajardo, the San Miguel Beer slotman and two-time defending MVP, is in close pursuit with 39.6 averages SPs through the end of the elimination round in the list the league released on Thursday.
The two could likely end up also fighting for the season's MVP award, which has been the stranglehold of Fajardor for the past two years.
The San Miguel big man earlier clnched the Best Player of the Conference award during the Philippine Cup, which the Beermen won by pulling off the greatest finals comeback in PBA history when they rallied back from a huge 0-3 hole to stun the Alaska Aces.
But Castro could make a case for his first league MVP award should he manages to win the BPC title, and the Texters rule the season-ending conference. TNT Katropa emerged as the top team heading into the quarterfinal playoffs.
Terrence Romeo of GlobalPort is running third with 35.7 points, while Alaska’s Calvin Abueva (32.6) and Stanley Pringle of the Batang Pier (31.6) round out the Top Five.
Eugene Phelps of Phoenix leads the Best Import race with 61.4 SPs, ahead of Meralco’s Allen Durham, who tallied 54.3 SPs.
