JAYJAY Helterbrand admitted he is a big fan of Scottie Thompson for being the epitomy of the ‘Never Say Die’ mantra of Barangay Ginebra.
Helterbrand said he is impressed with the current batch of Ginebra players, and one player he particularly mentioned was Thompson.
“We are in good hands,” said Helterbrand on Sunday after the ‘Return of the Rivals’ match of Ginebra against Purefoods. “We have great coaches. We have upcoming players. I’m really, really a big fan of Scottie Thompson.”
Helterbrand and Thompson were teammates in the first two seasons of Thompson’s career before Helterbrand retired from basketball after 17 years in the PBA.
The 42-year-old Helterbrand said Thompson, now in his fourth year in the league, is exactly what the ‘NSD’ spirit is as he brings his best in every Ginebra game.
“He has the blood, NSD blood all the way, the never say die spirit. Nothing less for the fans. Really love him because he brings it every game as well as the other players,” said Helterbrand.
With Thompson’s abilities coupled with the coaching of Tim Cone, Helterbrand believes Barangay Ginebra has what it takes to win more championships in the future.
“I think we are in good hands. The future is good with those guys,” Helterbrand said.
