JAVEE Mocon said his rookie life has been made easier by veteran teammates who have welcomed him with open arms at Rain or Shine.
Mocon, selected sixth in last year’s PBA Rookie Draft, has been one of the most impressive freshmen this season, averaging 8.18 points and 7.45 rebounds for the Elastopainters in the Philippine Cup.
One of the biggest reasons for his steady play, Mocon said, is the mentorship of Gabe Norwood, Beau Belga, and other Rain or Shine veterans.
“Sobrang okay. Sobrang humble sila,” said the former San Beda ace. “Hindi sila ‘yung hindi ka papansinin. Sila pa ‘yung unang lalapit sayo lalo na si Kuya Gabe.”
The 24-year-old Mocon said Norwood took the young guys of the team under his wings, including fellow rookie J-Jay Alejandro and sophomore Rey Nambatac.
“Kaya pala they call him ‘The President,’ di ba? Kasi he brings in the new people tapos hindi niya ina-out of place. Ganun siyang tao. Sobrang bait at sobrang humble. Andito sila Jewel (Ponferada), Kuya James (Yap), lahat ng veterans, sobrang welcome ako sa Rain or Shine,” said Mocon.
Mocon said Beau Belga has also been helping him develop his game.
“He is hard on me. Once na I made a mistake, he is going to be all over me. Sasabihin niya kung ano ginawa ko at kung ano ang dapat kong gawin."
Still, Mocon said Belga can lighten the mood in practice as well as off the court.
“Kapag hindi kami naglalaro, okay. Kunwari scrimmage, ganun pa rin siya. Consistent naman siya. Pero off the court, sobrang bait, sobrang nakakatawa. Sobrang enjoy siya kasama kasi sobrang maloko,” said Mocon.
Mocon said he feels fortunate to have veterans who are very willing to share their knowledge to their rookie teammates.
“Ako I just accept it, absorb everything, na kahit sino nagsabi sa akin kasi it will help me in the long run,” said Mocon.
